News & Updates

Jan 6, 2014

Following on from Chambers support of the Northamptonshire based charity 'One Step at a Time' at Christmas, senior barrister and keen cyclist Robert Pettitt has taken up the baton to help this fantastic cause even further by embarking upon his own epic fundraising challenge.

The 'Cycling for Cycles' challenge will see Rob push his endurance powers to the limit as he aims to complete at least 4,000km (2,500 miles) of cycling during 2014 - including six 'sportives' (long distance cycling events) culminating in the punishing 'Granfondo Les Deux Alpes' at the end of August which features a staggering 4km climb. Impressive stuff, but the obvious question of course is "why?"

Cycling is a hugely popular sport in the UK, highlighted by the London 2012 successes of Sir Bradley Wiggins, Sir Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton, not to mention the last two Tour De France victories by British riders, but in the remote villages of Uganda a bicycle can literally be a life saver. The One Step at a Time charity do incredible support work with children in such rural areas, providing them with the means to help themselves, and the donation of a simple bicycle would enable children to fetch water quickly instead of having to walk many miles every day. Equally it provides the charity workers with transport between the villages to carry out their essential work, delivery of medical supplies and access to schools.

If Rob's relatively modest target of £650 is reached, he will be able to donate ten bicycles to the charity as well as other important equipment such as mosquito nets and water carriers. Every pound donated is vital, so please show your support and click on the link below to support his fantastic adventure.

We will be posting regular updates on the Cycling for Cycles challenge throughout the year and there will be additional fundraising activities being planned in the months ahead.
