Following her successful pupillage under the supervision of Robert Pettitt, Melissa has developed a busy and varied practice, regularly appearing in the Family Court representing parents, guardians, interveners and local authorities in public law and private proceedings. Melissa has represented clients on complex multi-day final hearings. She also regularly represents clients on Family Law Act applications.

In the private law sector, Melissa has represented parents seeking child arrangement orders, including applications for prohibited steps orders, specific issue orders and parental responsibility.

Melissa is approachable, measured and conscientious. She regularly develops strong professional rapports with clients. She is a popular choice with clients and instructing solicitors.

Civil

Melissa accepts instructions for MOJ Stage 3 hearings, Infant Approvals, Pre-action Disclosure Applications and Small Claims. Melissa accepts instructions for drafting and regularly provides advice on quantum using the Judicial College Guidelines and relevant case law.

Prior to joining Chambers Melissa worked for two leading nationwide advocacy companies. Melissa also worked for a personal injury law firm and therefore has a wealth of experience in this area.

Melissa gained considerable civil experience through regularly appearing in the County Courts as a solicitors’ agent. Cases in which Melissa was instructed on included disputes relating to contract, property, landlord and tenant, insolvency and personal injury. Melissa attended a variety of interlocutory hearings. In addition to this Melissa also volunteered at citizen’s advice providing free legal advice to members of the community.

Background

Melissa read Law at University of Leeds, before undertaking the Bar Professional Training Course. Melissa gained considerable civil litigation experience when working as a paralegal and a County Court Advocate prior to joining Chambers. She is a confident orator and obtained outstanding in her advocacy modules during the BPTC. Having completed the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts (L.A.M.D.A) with distinction, she has the confidence and ability to be clear and concise when making submissions in Court.

Prizes

Medico Legal Society prize winner for the highest mark in the personal injury and clinical negligence module on the BPTC.

Interests Away from work Melissa is a keen netball player and enjoys horse riding. Melissa also enjoys travelling. She has visited a number of countries such as Kenya, Thailand, Sri-Lanka, Canada and United States of America.
