Matthew holds a busy practice with a strong and varied client base in the areas of crime, family and civil.
He is regularly instructed in the Crown Court on behalf of the prosecution and defence. He has defended and prosecuted those accused of a variety of offences including serious and complex matters. He has a particular interest in crimes relating to violence and drugs.
He has appeared in the Court of Appeal on numerous occasions and has dealt with complicated issues regarding sentences of Imprisonment for Public Protection.
In addition, Matthew also has a very well established family practice and is often briefed in Children Act matters and deals extensively with Ancillary Relief applications. He also deals with injunctions under the Family Law Act 1996. He accepts instructions in personal injury matters and general civil work.
Prior to commencing practice at the Bar, Matthew worked for a leading Birmingham law firm within their criminal litigation department. Whilst managing a heavy case-load he defended those accused of matters in the Crown Court including sexual offences, robberies, serious assaults, blackmail and conspiracies to defraud.
Furthermore he also worked for a large commercial law firm based in Sydney whilst he was resident in Australia.
Matthews personal interests include films, travelling and music. He is also a keen sports fan, with a particular interest in football and cricket whilst still managing to play the odd rugby match on occasions.
Notable Cases:
R v Considine [2007] EWCA 1166 - threats to kill, renewed application for leave to appeal made to the Court of Appeal. Prosecuted by the then Attorney-General, Lord Goldsmith QC.
R v Georcelin [2006] - series of armed robberies of taxi drivers.
R v Bristow [2005] - perverting the course of justice, successful appeal to the Court of Appeal.
